Riding the school bus can be an exciting part of your child’s day, full of new experiences and friends. But, like any journey, it’s important to stay safe on the way to and from school. In this blog, we’ll explore some simple safety tips that will help your child stay safe while waiting at bus stops, getting on and off the bus, and during the ride.
Remember, safety first, and let’s dive right in!
1. Be Early and Stay in Line:
Getting to the bus stop a little early is a great way to avoid any rush or chaos. When you arrive, stand in a single-file line away from the road. This will make it easier for the bus driver to see you and ensure everyone gets on the bus safely.
The start of a new year is the perfect time for a friendly reminder about bus safety, especially during winter on Long Island. Snow, ice, darker mornings, and cold temperatures all mean we need to be extra mindful as students head to and from school.
At Suburban Bus Transportation, based in Bellmore, NY, our drivers proudly serve families and schools across Long Island, from Manhasset and Merrick to Massapequa, Deer Park, Babylon, Hauppauge, and everywhere in between. We’re more than a transportation provider. We’re part of the community, and we take that responsibility seriously.
– Getting to the Bus Stop Safely
• Leave home a few minutes early so there’s no need to rush on icy sidewalks.
• Wear shoes or boots with good traction to help prevent slips and falls.
• Walk carefully and stay alert around snowbanks, driveways, and plowed areas.
– Waiting for the Bus
• Stand at least six feet back from the roadway while waiting.
• Avoid playing, pushing, or stepping into the street.
• Our drivers are trained to watch carefully, but clear visibility keeps everyone safer.
– Boarding the Bus
• Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals that it’s safe to board.
• Use handrails when stepping onto the bus, especially in wet or icy conditions.
• One student at a time helps maintain a calm and safe environment.
– Crossing the Street
• Only cross when directed by the driver.
• Make eye contact with the driver before stepping into the roadway.
• Walk straight across and stay alert for traffic in all directions.
– Riding the Bus Safely
• Remain seated and face forward during the ride.
• Keep aisles clear of backpacks, instruments, and winter gear.
• Calm, respectful behavior allows drivers to focus fully on safety.
These reminders are especially important for our young riders and students with special needs, where routine, patience, and clear communication make all the difference.
A Message from Our Drivers
Our drivers are highly trained professionals who care deeply about the students they transport each day. They approach every route with patience, awareness, and pride. Winter weather can change quickly, but our commitment never does.
At Suburban Bus Transportation, safety and security come before everything else. Always.
A New Year, A Shared Commitment
As we begin the new year, we thank the families, schools, and communities we serve for working alongside us to keep students safe. When drivers, parents, and students work together, every ride starts and ends the right way.
